Messenger and WhatsApp On October 4, the main social network Facebook, its Messenger offshoot, Instagram and WhatsApp properties were down for more than seven hours for users around the world.
After issuing an apology last night, Facebook has informed users of what happened, in an effort to curb speculation about a potential malicious attack on the under-fire company, or the potential loss of user data.
In a post on Facebook’s engineering blog
The company blamed the outage on the system that Cameroon WhatsApp Number List manages the capacity of the global backbone network. The result was that the backbone that connects all of Facebook’s data centers around the world completely collapsed.
“The backbone is the network that Facebook has built to connect all of our computing facilities together, which consists of tens of thousands of miles of fiber optic cables spanning the globe and connecting all of our data centers,” wrote Santosh Janardhan, who is the company’s vice president of infrastructure.
The company goes into much more detail, saying that the WhatsApp Number Database DNS issues suspected to be causing the problem were the result of the backbone collapse. DNS addresses disappeared from the web yesterday, making Facebook inaccessible to anyone.
“To ensure reliable operation
Our DNS servers disable these BGP advertisements if they themselves cannot talk to our data centers. As this indicates an unhealthy network connection,” Janardhan continued. “During the recent outage, the entire backbone was taken down. Causing those locations to declare themselves unhealthy and remove these Bulk Database BGP advertisements. The end result was that our DNS servers became inaccessible even though they were still operational. This made it impossible for the rest of the Internet to find our servers.”
The company says that once the issue was identified. It was able to bring the backbone back online, restoring functionality.
